The city of Agdam was totally captured on 23 July 1993. Most of the city was destroyed by Armenian artillery.
وتم احتلال مدينة أغدام احتلالا كاملا يوم ٢٣ تموز/يوليه ١٩٩٣ ودمرت المدفعية اﻷرمنية معظم اجزاء المدينة.

On 23 July these forces took control of the strategic city of Agdam, situated outside Nagorny Karabakh, while continuing their push towards Fizuli; towards Barda, in the north; and towards Agjabedi, in the east.

The massive offenses of Armenian military forces against the administrative centre of the district - the city of Agdam with its population of almost 60,000 - began at 0700 hours.
وقد بدأ هجوم القوات المسلحة اﻷرمنية الشامل على المركز الاداري للمقاطعة - أي مدينة أغدام وسكانها الذين يصل عددهم الى ٦٠ ٠٠٠ نسمة تقريبا - في الساعة ٠٠/٧.

He further added that his " delegation considers that the capture of the city of Agdam and its surrounding district means that Security Council resolution 822 (1993) has clearly been violated " .

9. Following consultation with the nine countries of the CSCE Minsk Group, the Chairman of the CSCE Minsk Conference made a statement, " strongly condemn[ing] the offensive on, and the reported seizure of, the Azerbaijani city of Agdam " and " ask[ing] for the immediate cessation of hostilities and for the withdrawal from the occupied territory " .

In particular, a statement by Michael McCurry, spokesman of the United States Department of State, dated 4 August 1993, says that " following condemnation by the United States Department of State of the 23 July attack by Nagorny Karabakh Armenian forces on the Azerbaijani city of Agdam, the Department of State has learned that these forces have also thoroughly looted and burned Agdam " .
وعلى وجه الخصوص، فقد جاء في تصريح مؤرخ ٤ آب/اغسطس ١٩٩٣ أدلى به مايكل ماكوري، المتحدث باسم وزارة الخارجية في الولايات المتحدة، أنه " في أعقاب إدانة وزارة الخارجية في الولايات المتحدة للهجوم الذي شنته قوات ناغورني كاراباخ اﻷرمينية يوم ٢٣ تموز/يوليه على مدينة أغدام اﻷذربيجانية، علمت وزارة الخارجية أن هذه القوات قد قامت أيضا بنهب وحرق أغدام بصورة كاملة " .
