The Committee on Conferences and the General Assembly have considered the question of the development of a cost accounting system for conference services in 1996 and 1997 and the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to submit a report on this issue to the Committee on Conferences and the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions by 31 July 1998.

In discussions with the Committee on Conferences and the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions in recent years, the Department has argued that flexibility in applying the mandatory age of retirement for language staff would ease the demographic transition currently taking place.

In this connection, I should also like to draw the attention of members to operative paragraph 11 of the same resolution, in which the Secretary-General is requested to submit a report to the Assembly at its fifty-first session, through the Committee on Conferences and the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, on the implementation of the measures spelt out in the resolution, including information on possible savings.
