The Commission has created the Regional Network of Research and Training Centres on desertification control in Asia and the Pacific in order to assist the poor in arid and mountain areas.

Efforts to integrate environmental issues in general, and that of desertification control in Mali in particular, into development plans, policies and programmes started in 1974 after the drought that afflicted all the ICDCS (Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel) countries in 1972-1973.

165. Some delegations expressed the view that since Asia was one of the regions most affected by desertification and drought, particular attention should be paid to that matter. The existing machinery and activities of ESCAP dealing with that issue, such as activities under the programme of the network of desertification control in Asia and the Pacific, should be strengthened.

Cooperation with Annex IV of the UNCCD has also yielded results in this respect, such as the introduction of an information system on desertification control in countries bordering on the Mediterranean and the Network for Research to Combat Desertification (DESERTNET) project, aimed at setting up a Mediterranean network on desertification monitoring.

The Joint Venture between UNEP and UNDP/UNSO has leveraged close to 300 million dollars worth of work on desertification control in the Sudano-Sahelian region.
