43. In my report on enhancing mediation and its support activities (S/2009/189), I emphasized that the United Nations does not have a monopoly on mediation.

2. The report of the Secretary-General on enhancing mediation and its support activities (S/2009/189) examined the mediation challenges faced by the United Nations and its partners and outlined some considerations for strengthening mediation processes.

In our view, there is a need to improve those practices so that the call of the Secretary-General to create a new generation of United Nations mediators can be realized (see report of the Secretary-General on enhancing mediation and its support activities (S/2009/189)).

Bangladesh therefore commends the Secretary-General's report on enhancing mediation and its support activities (S/2009/189) for promoting the better use of the United Nations mediation mandate, and cosponsored resolution 65/283 on strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution.

As my report of 8 April 2009 on enhancing mediation and its support activities (S/2009/189) outlines, peace agreements should provide an overall framework, but at times they set out an overly broad, ambitious and sometimes only preliminary agenda.
