The Convention Secretariat draws attention to the fact that the Convention is the first legally binding international agreement to provide for the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities embodying traditional lifestyles.

39. The need for Parties to initiate projects on capacity-building with indigenous and local communities to address concerns in the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and of equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of their knowledge, innovations and practices has been emphasized.
