Nevertheless, substantive work on the development of standard methodologies for measuring essential climate variables (ECVs), encompassing the atmospheric, terrestrial and marine domains, is being carried out in the framework of the implementation plan of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) of the UNFCCC.

45. The SBSTA noted the increased usefulness of terrestrial essential climate variables beyond climate change observations, such as for biodiversity and desertification, and encouraged GTOS to increase synergy with ongoing relevant initiatives.
