He expressed his appreciation for the work of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for the Elaboration of an International Convention to Combat Desertification in those Countries experiencing serious drought and/or Desertification, particularly in Africa at its second session and hoped that the Committee might complete its work within the specified time-frame.

In particular, it welcomed the progress achieved thus far on the elaboration of an international convention to combat desertification in those countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa, as effective economic growth and development in African countries were often hampered by drought and desertification.

54. Make use of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in those countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa, in addressing land degradation and as a tool to assist in addressing, inter alia, poverty and hunger, and in this regard:
