With respect to western Asia, the following subregional organizations assisted the first national report review process in 1999: ACSAD (Arab Centre for Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands), ICARDA (International Center for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas), AOAD (Arab Organization for Agricultural Development) and CEDARE (Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe).

Support was also given for a subregional consultative meeting organised by the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Drylands (ACSAD) in Damascus (9-11 April 1997) and the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) in Cairo to explore options for subregional cooperation through cooperative arrangements such as the establishment of a Western Asian Network to Combat Desertification.

The Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe, which is a regional organization, has worked as the executing agency for the " Programme for the Development of a Regional Strategy for the Utilization of the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System " during the period from 1998 to 2002.

The most significant of these activities are the Jamahiriya's membership in the Council of Arab Ministers for Environmental Issues since 1989 and in the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE).
