As part of the preparations for the Symposium, the UNCTAD secretariat requested information from Land-locked and transit developing countries and relevant intergovernmental and subregional organizations regarding the particular problems they face in promoting efficient transit-transport systems.

The Fourth Meeting of Governmental Experts from Land-locked and Transit Developing Countries and Representatives of Donor Countries and Financial and Development Institutions will be convened in New York from 24 to 26 August 1999 pursuant to paragraph 11 of General Assembly resolution 52/183.
1- سوف يعقد الاجتماع الرابع للخبراء الحكوميين من البلدان النامية غير الساحلية وبلدان المرور العابر النامية وممثلي البلدان المانحة والمؤسسات المالية والإنمائية في نيويورك في الفترة من 24 إلى 26 آب/أغسطس 1999 عملا بالفقرة 11 من قرار الجمعية العامة 52/183.

In order to further promote these efforts designed to improve transit transport systems, the above resolution requested the Secretary-General to convene a second meeting of governmental experts from Land-locked and transit developing countries and representatives from donor countries and financial and development institutions, whose objective is to review the progress of the measures they are undertaking in this regard.

It was against such a background that the General Assembly had decided to convene an intergovernmental meeting of experts from Land-locked and transit developing countries with representatives of donor countries and financial and development institutions in 1993.

The purpose of the Symposium was to address specific regional problems in improving the transit transport systems, taking into account the recommendations of the first Meeting of Governmental Experts from Land-locked and Transit Developing Countries and Representatives of Donor Countries and Financial and Development Institutions, held in New York in May 1993.
