One of the main objectives of the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Commerce and the UNCITRAL Model Law on Electronic Signatures was to preempt disharmony and possible over-regulation by offering general criteria to establish the functional equivalence between electronic and paper-based signature and authentication methods.
