The Advisory Committee further recalls that, in its resolution 1885 (2009), the Security Council authorized UNMIL to assist the Liberian Government with the 2011 general presidential and legislative elections, including through the provision of logistical support, the coordination of international assistance and support for national institutions to conduct the elections.

Reciprocally, in an exchange of letters between the Security Council and the Secretary-General, the Council authorized the temporary deployment on an infantry company of 150 personnel and 3 formed police units, totalling 100 personnel from UNOCI to UNMIL for a period of 8 weeks to provide additional security in the context of the general presidential and legislative elections in Liberia

The Liberian National Elections Commission, in a letter dated 10 February, requested the United Nations to deploy a needs assessment mission to Liberia for the purpose of evaluating the needs of the Commission in preparing for, and conducting, voter registration in 2009, ahead of the general presidential and legislative elections in October 2011.

12. At the end of seven years of civil war, a constitutional civilian Government had been installed following general presidential and legislative elections held on 19 July 1997 with electoral assistance from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Organization of African Unity, the United Nations and the donor community.
