In many of the States parties to the Covenant where the death penalty has not been abolished, other methods of execution such as hanging, shooting, electrocution or injection of certain materials are used.

Article 6, paragraph 2, refers only to countries in which the death penalty has not been abolished and thus rules out the application of the text to countries which have abolished the death penalty.

5.1 The death penalty has not been abolished in Mauritius since the last Periodic Report, although the Prime Minister has made an official statement in February 1995 to the effect that the application of the death penalty will be henceforth suspended.

Calls upon Member States in which the death penalty has not been abolished to effectively apply the safeguards guaranteeing protection of the rights of those facing the death penalty, in which it is stated that capital punishment may be imposed for only the most serious crimes, it being understood that their scope should not go beyond intentional crimes with lethal or other extremely grave consequences;
٢ - يهيب بالدول اﻷعضاء التي لم تلغ فيها عقوبة الاعدام بعد أن تطبق تطبيقا فعالا الضمانات التي تكفل حماية حقوق الذين يواجهون عقوبة الاعدام، والتي تنص على أنه لا يجوز فرض عقوبة الاعدام الا على أخطر الجرائم، على ألا يتجاوز نطاقها الجرائم المتعمدة المفضية إلى الموت أو غيره من العقوب الوخيمة جدا؛
