Under the presidencies of Ambassador Pablo Macedo of Mexico and Ambassador Khasbazaryn Bekhbat of Mongolia and Ambassador Omar Hilale of Morocco, seven informal plenary meetings were held on the issues on the agenda of the Conference on Disarmament.

Mr. Hilale (Morocco) said that his country welcomed the Second Review Conference and hoped that it would help strengthen respect for the principles of international law in the field of disarmament.

At the same time, I would like to take this opportunity to thank your predecessors, Ambassador Amina Mohamed of Kenya, Ambassador Rajmah Hussain of Malaysia, Ambassador Pablo Macedo of Mexico, Ambassador Khasbazaryn Bekhbat of Mongolia and Ambassador Omar Hilale of Morocco, for their untiring efforts during the 2004 session of the Conference to move towards a programme of work.

7. Mr. Hilale (Morocco) said that North Africa, the Sahel region and the Middle East were experiencing an unprecedented rise in terrorism and radicalism.
