The Sudan supports and contributes to the international and regional efforts aimed at banning anti-personnel landmines. In this regard, we participated in the first Conference on anti-personnel landmines in Africa, organized by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and hosted by the Government of South Africa from 19 to 21 May 1997.
إن السودان يدعم ويشارك في الجهود الدولية واﻹقليمية الهادفة الى فرض حظر على اﻷلغام اﻷرضية المضادة لﻷفراد، وشارك في هذا الصدد في المؤتمر اﻷول لﻷلغام المضادة لﻷفراد في أفريقيا، الذي أعدته منظمة الوحدة اﻷفريقية واستضافته حكومة جنوب أفريقيا خلال الفترة من ١٩ إلى ٢١ أيار/ مايو الماضي.

Noting that his Government had actively pursued environmental issues, had ratified the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa, and had participated in the first Conference of the Parties held in Rome, he said that the Convention should now be provided with the requisite financial and instrumental means for implementing its commitments.
٤٥ - وأعلن أن حكومته تولي المسائل البيئية اهتماما فعالا، حيث صادقت على اتفاقية اﻷمم المتحدة لمكافحة التصحر في البلدان التي تعاني من جفاف خطير أو تصحر أو كلاهما، وخصوصا في أفريقيا، كما أنها شاركت في المؤتمر اﻷول لﻷطراف والذي عقد في روما، وقال إن الاتفاقية يجب أن تعزز اﻵن بالوسائل المالية والمؤسسية لتنفيذ الالتزامات الواردة فيها.

٢٥ - وشاركت اليونسكو في المؤتمر اﻷول لوزراء الاقتصاد والمالية في الجماعة الفرانكوفونية )موناكو، يومي ١٤ و ١٥ نيسان/أبريل ١٩٩٩(، الذي تناول موضوع " الاستثمار والتجارة " .

Lastly, she recalled that the participants in the first Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, particularly in Africa, had decided to request the General Assembly to provide $1 million for conference-servicing costs from the regular budget for 1998-1999; she asked whether that request had been taken into account.
٦٦ - وفي ختام كلمتها، أشارت إلى أن المشتركين في المؤتمر اﻷول لﻷطراف في اتفاقية اﻷمم المتحدة لمكافحة التصحر في البلدان التي تعاني من الجفاف الشديد و/أو من التصحر، وبخاصة في أفريقيا، قد قرروا أن يطلبوا إلى الجمعية العامة أن تقدم مبلغ ١ مليون دولار لتغطية تكاليف خدمات المؤتمرات من الميزانية العادية للفترة ١٩٩٨-١٩٩٩؛ وتساءلت عما إذا كان هذا الطلب قد أخذ في الاعتبار.
