The Union plays an important role in disseminating information and sharing experiences on: how to improve access to affordable housing for lower-income groups; the provision and financing of urban infrastructure and services; water supply and sewage; electric power supply; waste disposal; and access to land -- all of which are important factors in improving the quality of life in Latin American countries.

As a next step, the SBSTA agreed that, at its twenty-first session, it will focus on exchanging information and sharing experiences, views and lessons learned, taking into account different national circumstances, with respect to the following topics:

16. Three workshops on mitigation (WS-1, WS-2 and WS-3, see figure 1) were conducted between June 2004 and May 2005, which focused on exchanging information and sharing experiences on a range of cross-cutting issues, taking into account different national circumstances.

Concrete outcomes of the programme include (a) awareness-building regarding clean technology options and their availability; (b) increasing regional monitoring capacities through information and sharing experiences in emission monitoring; (c) emission standards, policies and legislation; and (d) technical and management capacity enhancement of technical personnel and policymakers on pollution control.
