Progress in response to this legislation has been uneven, although measures have been taken over the years with a view to improving the distribution of responsibilities in identified programme areas, enhancing coordination and, as appropriate, promoting joint activities, through joint units and other forms of collaborative activity.

In addition, as a result of enhanced collaboration and cooperation between UNCTAD and the regional commissions, it is considered that the role of coordination of the joint units could be fulfilled through different means, and that their full integration into the respective commissions would be of greater substantive and administrative benefit.
