Following his appointment as the Acting Special Representative, Ambassador Lansana Kouyate launched an initiative to normalize the relationship between UNOSOM II and the Somali National Alliance (SNA), while maintaining contacts with the Somali Salvation Alliance (SSA) or Group of 12.

Ambassador Kouyate and other officials, stressing the extent of the problem of internal displacement in the region, welcomed this initiative and further consultations are under way between the Office of the Representative and the ECOWAS secretariat with a view to convening such a seminar during 2002.
