The Secretariat and the Joint UNEP/OCHA Environment Unit have entered into an agreement to provide mutual assistance related to notification and reporting, mobilization of resources and response to international environmental emergencies involving the transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.

It was noted in that regard that the mercury in waste partnership area had been working with the secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.

1. The 1989 Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal came into force in May 1992 and now has 163 Parties.

After the customary exchange of courtesies, the third session of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention for the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal was declared closed at 7.40 p.m. on 30 April 2004.
153- وبعد تبادل كلمات المجاملة المعتادة، أعلن اختتام الدورة الثالثة للفريق العامل مفتوح العضوية التابع لاتفاقية بازل بشأن التحكم في نقل النفايات الخطرة والتخلص منها عبر الحدود في الساعة 7:40 من مساء يوم 30 نيسان/إبريل 2004.

As part of its core operations, the secretariat works closely with the secretariats of other relevant international bodies, in particular the secretariats of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.

Regrettably, it was not possible for the International Atomic Energy Agency or the Secretariat of the Basel Convention to attend the workshop, but the latter made available a paper on the Protocol on Liability and Compensation for Damage Resulting from Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal (1999), which is not yet in force.
ومما يؤسف له، عدم تمكن الوكالة الدولية للطاقة الذرية أو أمانة اتفاقية بازل من حضور حلقة العمل، ولكن أمانة اتفاقية بازل قدمت ورقة عن البروتوكول الخاص بالمسؤولية والتعويض عن الأضرار الناجمة عن نقل النفايات الخطرة والتخلص منها عبر الحدود (1999)، والتي لم تدخل حيز النفاذ بعد.

He stated that substantial efforts had been made to identify partners in the delivery of technical assistance, as exemplified by cooperation with FAO and UNEP regional offices and regional centres established under the Basel Convention on the Control of the Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.
