33. In my recent report, I also referred to my concern over a growing threat from extremist Islamist groups, who have reportedly found safe haven in Palestinian refugee camps, to the presence of the United Nations in Lebanon.

73. As stressed in my recent report on the implementation of resolution 1559 (2004) (S/2007/629), I remain concerned by the conditions facing displaced Palestinians from Nahr al-Bared camp and, in general, by the living conditions in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.

As indicated in my recent report on the implementation of resolution 1559 (2004), the presence of heavily armed positions belonging to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command and Fatah al-Intifada on the border between Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic continues to represent a worrisome anomaly.

In my recent report on strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution (A/66/811), which outlines recent developments, trends and challenges in mediation today, I emphasized that more determination and consistent efforts are needed to ensure that all mediation efforts adhere to normative frameworks such as resolution 1325 (2000).
