As I mentioned in my seventh report (S/2001/373), a team of civilian and military enumerators visited government-controlled military camps in the provinces of Kasai Occidental, Katanga, Bas-Congo and Kinshasa to meet with child combatants and to prepare a preliminary profile of child soldiers in FAC.

110. That said, I would recall the breadth of the new tasks likely to face MONUC in an eventual third phase, as outlined in my seventh report (S/2001/373, paras. 93-110).

Since my seventh report to the Council (S/1999/788), events in the Central African Republic have been dominated to a large extent by the preparations for the presidential election by the Mixed and Independent Electoral Commission (CEMI), which was assisted by MINURCA and various external donors, the campaign by political parties and the first round of the election, which took place on 19 September after two consecutive postponements.

4. At my request, the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Marie Guéhenno, visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo immediately after the Council's consideration of my seventh report (S/2001/373) in mid-April.

I. INTRODUCTION 1. By paragraph 4 of its resolution 1260 (1999) of 20 August 1999, the Security Council authorized the provisional expansion of the United Nations Observer Mission in Sierra Leone (UNOMSIL) with the necessary equipment and administrative and medical support to perform the tasks set out in paragraph 38 of my seventh report to the Security Council, dated 30 July 1999 (S/1999/836).

The present report has been prepared on the basis of the inclusion of the Central African Republic in the workplan of the Working Group of the Security Council on Children and Armed Conflict, in December 2007, following the listing of parties recruiting and using children in the Central African Republic, in the annexes of my seventh report on children and armed conflict (S/2007/757).

1. In my seventh report on the United Nations Operation in Burundi (ONUB), dated 21 June 2006 (S/2006/429), I recommended that the withdrawal of ONUB be followed by the establishment of a small United Nations integrated office in Burundi, to be known as the United Nations Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB), on 1 January 2007, for an initial period of one year.

4. As I mentioned in paragraph 64 of my seventh report on ONUB (S/2006/429) and also based on the benchmarks outlined in paragraphs 24-34 below, it is proposed that the mandate of BINUB would include supporting the peace consolidation process and the Government's efforts in the following areas:
