The Assembly stressed the need to strengthen IACSD and its system of task managers, with a view to further enhancing system-wide intersectoral cooperation and coordination for the implementation of Agenda 21 and contributing to the promotion of coordinated follow-up to the major United Nations conferences in the area of sustainable development.

In 1997, the General Assembly considered that the Inter-Agency Committee and its system of task managers should be strengthened to enhance system-wide cooperation " for the implementation of Agenda 21 and for the promotion of coordinated follow-up to the major United Nations conferences in the area of sustainable development " (resolution S-19/2, annex, para. 120).
