The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) provides a sound basis for such situations, including through mechanisms for the settlement of disputes and the obligation of parties to seek, in the case of the delimitation of exclusive economic zones and the continental shelf, provisional arrangements of a practical nature.

States, individually or through bilateral and multilateral cooperation, are also required to complete or update marine biodiversity, marine living resource and critical habitat profiles of exclusive economic zones and other areas under national jurisdiction, taking account of changes in the environment brought about by natural causes and human activities.

With respect to non-living marine resources, in a report prepared by the Secretary-General about a decade ago, the needs were identified for “more comprehensive knowledge of the potential of exclusive economic zones and continental shelves”, for an “information base required for resource management and environmental protection” and for “assessing the resources of the exclusive economic zone” (A/45/712, paras. 37 and 38).
٣٤٤ - فيما يتعلق بالموارد البحرية غير الحية، حدد تقرير أعده اﻷمين العام قبل ما يقارب عشر سنوات، الاحتياجات التي تتطلبها " معرفة أكثر شمولا بإمكانيات المناطق الاقتصادية الخالصة والجروف القارية " ، و " قاعدة المعلومات اللازمة ﻹدارة الموارد وحماية البيئة " ، و " تقييم موارد المنطقة الاقتصادية الخالصة " )A/45/712، الفقرتان ٣٧ و ٣٨(.

(b) To deposit with the Secretary-General charts or lists of geographical coordinates of exclusive economic zones, as provided for in the Convention, preferably using the most recent geodetic datums, such as the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS 84).
