To counter drug trafficking and abuse, the United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) promotes adherence to and implementation of international drug control treaties, particularly the 1988 United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, which is the main framework for international cooperation.
