Allow me also to praise the merits of our Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, for the foresight, wisdom and, above all, patience with which he is guiding the Organization, as well as for his sustained efforts in seeking international peace and security, despite all kinds of difficulties and the immensity of his tasks.

Much has already been done, thanks in particular to the efforts of our Secretary-General regarding the Secretariat, whose structures have been modernized and whose procedures have been rationalized, though work must continue, particularly in the financial, budgetary and management areas.
لقد أُنجز الكثير، وذلك، على وجه الخصوص، بفضل جهود أميننا العام فيما يتعلق بالأمانة العامة، التي استحدثت هياكلها ورشَّدت إجراءاتها، مع أنه يجب أن يستمر العمل، وبشكل خاص في المجالات المالية والمتعلقة بالميزانية والإدارية.

I also wish to extend our thanks to the United Nations family, and in particular to Under-Secretary-General Jan Egeland and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and to pay tribute to the work they have undertaken under the guidance of our Secretary-General by reacting so promptly to that unprecedented disaster and by meeting the emergency needs of the countries and peoples concerned.
وأود أيضا أن أعرب عن شكري لأسرة الأمم المتحدة، وخاصة وكيل الأمين العام يان إغلند ومكتب تنسيق الشؤون الإنسانية، وان أشيد بالعمل الذي اضطلعوا به بتوجيه من أميننا العام بالاستجابة العاجلة للكارثة غير المسبوقة وبالوفاء بالاحتياجات الطارئة للبلدان والشعوب المعنية.

Open meetings stimulated a good deal of public interest in the United Nations, something it sorely needs now, despite the impressive efforts of our Secretary-General on the celebrity “rubber-chicken” circuit — efforts which are of course admired and supported by us all.
