I also wish to renew Burkina Faso's appreciation and support for the work of the Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan, who guides the work of our world Organization with courage, lucidity and determination.

والسيد بطرس بطرس غالى اﻷمين العام، ذلك المهني الجريء رافع لواء المُثل العليا، مُثل السلام والتضامن والعدالة، أود أن أشيد به إشادة يستحقها عن جدارة على جهوده المتواصلة لمصلحة منظمتنا العالمية.

Now, at the end of another war - the cold war - it is time to recognize a new content in the objectives of our world Organization and new conditions for providing deep-rooted, lasting responses to the aspirations for justice and well-being shared by all mankind.
واﻵن، في نهاية حرب أخرى، وهي الحرب الباردة، حان الوقت ﻷن نسلم بمضمون جديد في أهداف منظمتنا العالمية وشروط جديدة لتوفير استجابات متأصلة ودائمة للمطامح إلى العدالة والرفاه فهي المطامح التي تتشاطرها اﻹنسانية جمعاء.

At a time when the United Nations is frequently faulted for not being equipped to deal with pressing challenges, we do well to recall the pivotal role of our world Organization and its agencies in spearheading efforts to secure equal access for women in all aspects of political, economic and social development.
وفي الوقت الذي يتكرر فيه إلقاء اللوم على اﻷمم المتحدة ﻷنها غير مهيأة للتصدي للتحديات الملحﱠة، يجدر بنا أن نذكر بالدور المحوري الذي قامت به منظمتنا العالمية ووكالاتها في بدء الجهود الرامية إلى تأمين تكافؤ الفرص بالنسبة للمرأة في جميع جوانب التنمية السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية.

We are convinced that the involvement of South Africa, with its important human and natural resources, in the activities of the United Nations will be to the benefit both of our world Organization and of the consolidation of democracy - of course, in South Africa first, but also as an example to be followed in our world of " We the peoples " , as our Charter says.
