It should be emphasized that scientists and specialists in our country have accumulated a great deal of material concerning the impact of radiation on the environment, on the migration of radionuclides and on ecosystems and concerning the effect of long-term doses of radiation on people's health, as well as the effectiveness of counter-measures taken to protect the population, and so on.

The results of this work have been issued in a series of publications: the 1993 annual report of the Committee, with nine scientific annexes, the 1994 annual report with two scientific annexes, and the present 1996 annual report of the Committee, which contains one scientific annex, " Effects of radiation on the environment " .

Mr. GUILLEN (Peru), introducing the report of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), said that the report summarized the conclusions of two scientific annexes entitled " Epidemiological studies of radiation carcinogenesis " and " Adaptive responses to radiation in cells and organisms " , and provided brief information on its work in studying the effects of radiation on the environment.

The Committee will gather new data on radiation exposures from natural, man-made and occupational sources; extend its evaluation of medical exposures, especially in relation to new diagnostic procedures that can result in high doses; perform a comprehensive assessment of radon in homes and workplaces; and examine the effects of radiation on the environment as part of a study on radioecology.
