After hosting the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, and providing support to the International Mechanism of scientific expertise on Biodiversity, UNEP convened an intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder meeting to discuss an intergovernmental science-policy platform on biodiversity and ecosystem services in Putra Jaya, Malaysia, from 10 to 12 November 2008.

The main outcome of the conference was the decision to initiate a consultative process on an international mechanism of scientific expertise on biodiversity, which later converged with the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment follow-up process into the single intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder process on the Platform.
