This definition is reproduced without change in article 2, paragraph 1 (j), of the Vienna Convention on Succession of States in respect of Treaties of 23 August 1978, which nevertheless adds a reference to the various circumstances in which a reservation can be made by a State “when making a notification of succession to a treaty”:
