12. The deployment of the first elements of the ECOWAS Mission in Liberia (ECOMIL) began on schedule on 4 August.

During the meeting, which was attended by the Transitional President and UNIOGBIS, the Authority decided to extend the mandate of the ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ECOMIB) until 31 December 2014 and to extend the transition period until the inauguration of the legitimate authorities.

They took note of the recommendation made therein to extend the presence of the ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau beyond 31 December 2014 and strongly appealed to all international and bilateral partners to support the Government in the implementation of its security sector reform programme and other reforms.

The deployment of the ECOWAS Mission in Liberia (ECOMIL) also provides a useful example of cooperation between ECOWAS and the United Nations, in so much as the resources of the latter were authorized by the Security Council in its resolution 1497 (2003) to be used to support the deployment of the first Nigerian battalion, which had just completed its tour of duty in the United Nations mission in Sierra Leone.
