Certainly the external oversight units have an obligation to identify issues that they believe may be of concern to Member States, but the intergovernmental bodies need to respond to such suggestions and be willing to guide and target the external oversight units on those issues of particular concern to Member States, and they need to devote attention and sufficient time for the consideration of the outputs of the external oversight units.

The CHAIRMAN said that, with regard to the question of the strengthening of oversight bodies, in resolution 50/214, section III, paragraph 2, the General Assembly had decided to consider at its resumed fiftieth session the modalities of the strengthening of the external oversight mechanisms decided upon in decision 47/454 of 23 December 1992.
