On 26 June 2010, the United Nations Committee against Torture, the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, the Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment and the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture made the following statement to commemorate the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture:

The Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment has underscored that the elderly are among the highly vulnerable in general detention facilities and in psychiatric institutions, noting that they suffer double or triple discrimination.
