E. Future development of the Joint Unit

The Advisory Group recognized the important role of the Joint Unit in the mobilization and coordination of international assistance to environmental emergency response. It also emphasized the joint unit's willingness to better integrate preparedness and response activities.

18. The main functions of the Joint Unit are to mobilize and coordinate urgent international assistance to countries facing environmental emergencies, inter alia by acting as a broker between affected and donor countries, functioning as a clearing house for information, providing a switchboard for disaster notification and alerts, and arranging for impartial assessments.
18 - إن الوظائف الرئيسية للوحدة المشتركة هى تعبئة وتنسيق المعونات الدولية العاجلة للبلدان التي تواجه حالات طوارئ بيئية، وذلك بالعمل، ضمناً، كوسيط بين البلدان المتضررة والمانحة، العمل كمركز لتبادل المعلومات، وتقديم وسيلة إخطار وإنذار بالكوارث، والترتيب لعمليات التقييم المحايدة.
