غير أن المادة ٦ توضح - وهذا التوضيح بالغ اﻷهمية - أن " كل محاولة تستهدف التقويض الجزئي أو الكلي للوحدة القومية والسلامة اﻹقليمية لبلد ما تكون متنافية ومقاصد ميثاق اﻷمم المتحدة ومبادئه " .

وقد أعلنت الجمعية العامة في قرارها 1514 (د-15) أن أية محاولة تهدف إلى تفكيك الوحدة الوطنية ووحدة الأراضي جزئيـا أو كليـا لأي بلد هي محاولة لا تتماشى مع أغراض ومبادئ ميثاق الأمم المتحدة.
