The main objective of the workshop was to obtain additional substantive input to the thematic study of the Expert Mechanism on the role of languages and culture in the promotion and protection of the rights and identity of indigenous peoples, to be discussed at the fifth session of the Expert Mechanism in July 2012.

1. In resolution 18/8 the Human Rights Council requested the Expert Mechanism to prepare a study on the role of languages and culture in the promotion and protection of the rights and identity of indigenous peoples, and to present it to the Human Rights Council at its twenty-first session.

Taking note of the study by the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples on the role of languages and culture in the promotion and protection of the rights and identity of indigenous peoples, according to which cultural and language rights are indivisible and central to all the other rights,

Calls upon States to consider, in consultation and cooperation with indigenous peoples, initiating and strengthening, as appropriate, effective legislative and policy measures to protect, promote, respect and, where necessary, revitalize indigenous peoples' languages and culture, taking into account, as appropriate, the study on the role of languages and culture in the promotion and protection of the rights and identity of indigenous peoples;
