The Conference adopted an action plan for the west and central African region and two legal agreements, the Convention for Cooperation in the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region (Abidjan, 1981), and the Protocol concerning Cooperation in Combating Pollution in Cases of Emergency.

UNEP has endeavoured to mobilize the political will of African Governments in a bid to revitalize the Abidjan Convention for Cooperation in the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region.

On that basis, the parties to the Nairobi Convention and to the Convention for Cooperation in the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region have developed new protocols for preventing, reducing, mitigating and controlling pollution emanating from land-sources and activities, which are to be adopted by conferences of plenipotentiaries.

(a) Convention for Cooperation in the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region (Abidjan Convention); adopted in 1981, entered into force in 1984;
(أ) اتفاقية التعاون في حماية وتنمية البيئة البحرية والساحلية لمنطقة غرب ووسط أفريقيا (اتفاقية أبيدجان) المعتمدة في 1981 والتي دخلت حيز النفاذ في 1984؛

Convention for Cooperation in the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region (Abidjan Convention). By article 16 of the Convention, the Contracting Parties designated UNEP as the secretariat of the Convention, and its secretariat functions are carried out through the UNEP Regional Coordinating Unit in Abidjan.

In fact, Sierra Leone is now party to the Abidjan Convention for Cooperation in the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region (1981), as well as to the Convention on Biological Diversity (1992), the Convention on Fishing and Conservation of Living Resources in the High Seas (1958) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (1973).
