The celebration of World Statistics Day will also acknowledge the service provided by international, regional and subregional agencies in promoting and facilitating the development of national statistical systems.

II. Proposal for the celebration of World Statistics Day in 2015

4. Also requests the Secretary-General to report on the implementation of the present resolution and on the experiences of World Statistics Day to the Statistical Commission at its forty-second session.

It took note of the recommendation to allocate adequate time for preparation of the celebrations at the national and global levels and observed that, while the celebrations for the observance of World Statistics Day in 2010 had reached a wide audience, more attention should be given in the future to maximizing coverage in the media.

5. While only one overarching theme should be chosen for the worldwide celebration of World Statistics Day, it is important to mention that the celebration will continue to be decentralized in nature.

Following the celebration of the first World Statistics Day, the Commission, at its forty-second session, in its decision 42/101, expressed satisfaction and appreciation that the observance of World Statistics Day had been a global success and had made a positive impact in advocating the importance of official statistics.

As a result of the success of this first celebration of World Statistics Day in 2010, the Commission, at its forty-third session, in March 2012, confirmed the recommendation of its Bureau that World Statistics Day be celebrated every five years, with the next celebration occurring in 2015.

15. Many videos were developed in the framework of World Statistics Day to promote statistical work and censuses among various audiences.

In addition, it further requested the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs to provide appropriate support to countries, regional and supranational organizations and thematic-oriented institutions in observance of World Statistics Day 2015 and to provide publicity material for the events being organized under the common theme.
