On 22 July 2010, the Court rendered its advisory opinion on the accordance with international law of the unilateral declaration of independence in respect of Kosovo.

37. The Court was requested by the General Assembly to give its opinion on the accordance of the declaration with international law. In rendering its opinion, the Court should first of all have ascertained the international law applicable in this area.

At its resumed sixty-fourth session, in September 2010, the General Assembly acknowledged the content of the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on the accordance with International Law of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence in respect of Kosovo and welcomed the readiness of the European Union to facilitate a process of dialogue between the parties.
