As a result of the work on the Convention on the Prohibition of Antipersonnel Mines, more attention is being given to conventional weapons in general.

The successful conclusion of negotiations on the Convention on the Prohibition of chemical weapons in September 1992 and, months later, the signing ceremony in Paris in January 1993, marked the beginning of a new stage in the implementation of a multilateral disarmament agreement which encompasses the elimination of a whole category of weapons under international control universally applied.
