The rules of international law on treaty interpretation shall be applied to establish whether a treaty is susceptible to termination, withdrawal or suspension in the event of an armed conflict.
تُطبَّق أحكام القانون الدولي المتعلقة بتفسير المعاهدات لتقرير ما إذا كانت المعاهدة قابلة للإنهاء أو للانسحاب منها أو لتعليقها في حالة نشوب نزاع مسلح.

In the absence of an express provision, resort would next be had, under draft article 5, to the established international rules on treaty interpretation so as to ascertain the fate of the treaty in the event of an armed conflict.

(4) The title of article 5 is formulated in such a manner as to confirm that the provision is not concerned with treaty interpretation generally, but rather with specific situations where the existing rules on treaty interpretation are to be applied.

In the absence of a treaty regulating the matter concerned, the rules of international law on treaty interpretation applied in accordance with draft article 5, which constituted a reference to the rules established under articles 31 and 32 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties.

For instance, a State Party to a treaty might issue statements on treaty interpretation, or unilateral declarations on its understanding of a treaty provision.
