In 2012, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders sent a joint communication about an alleged attack against a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activist.

2. In 2013, the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders raised concern with regard to the alleged lack of compliance with international human rights law of the 2009 Information and Communication Act, as amended in July 2013.

An urgent appeal was made in conjunction with the Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression and the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary execution concerning a confrontation between university students protesting a rise in transport fares and military personnel, which had reportedly broken out in Ujung Padang, Sulawesi, on 22 April 1996.
