It therefore welcomed the set of measures outlined in subprogramme 5.4 (Sustainable development) which was intended to develop a comprehensive framework for the more effective integration of the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainable development embracing the relevant sectoral and cross-sectoral components of Agenda 21 and incorporating the results of other major United Nations conferences held in recent years.

The Preparatory Committee reaffirmed that its substantive activities should take into account the results of other major United Nations conferences and contributions by other relevant organs and specialized agencies of the United Nations system, and invited them to contribute to and be actively involved in the preparatory process and the special session, by, inter alia, submitting proposals for further actions and initiatives (decision 4).1
