We believe that it is necessary to build upon the excellent efforts of Ambassador Palihakkara of Sri Lanka, the Special Coordinator on this issue during the 1998 session and speedily move towards the establishment of an ad hoc committee which will take into consideration the progress made in the ad hoc committee which the Conference established at its previous sessions.
ويرى وفد مصر أهمية البناء على الجهود المتميزة التي بذلها السفير باليهاكارا من سري لانكا المنسق الخاص المعني بالموضوع خلال دورة عام 1998، والمسارعة بإنشاء لجنة خاصة تأخذ في اعتبارها التقدم الذي أحرز في إطار اللجنة التي سبق للمؤتمر أن أنشأها في دوراته السابقة.

Last year the Special Coordinator on this issue, Ambassador Palihakkara of Sri Lanka, pointed out in his progress report that there was no objection in principle to the re—establishment of an ad hoc committee, while further consultations would be needed as to the timing.

I have on my list of speakers for today firstly, the Special Coordinator on prevention of an arms race in outer space, Ambassador Palihakkara of Sri Lanka, and then the representative of Sweden, Ambassador Norberg, followed by the representative of Brazil, Ambassador Lafer, on behalf of the Group of 21.

Although prevention of an arms race in outer space does not belong to the priorities of my delegation, we highly appreciate the work of the Special Coordinator on agenda item 3, Ambassador Palihakkara of Sri Lanka, and we support the idea of continuing the consultations on this item in 1999.
