By means of information circulars, the Secretariat reminded States parties to the Firearms Protocol of their obligation to provide information and invited signatories to do likewise by 20 May 2006.

The Conference may wish to urge States that are not parties to the Firearms Protocol to present their views and comments on the Firearms Protocol, addressing both its strengths and challenges, with a view to reinforcing cooperation to prevent, combat and eradicate the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, their parts and components and ammunition, and to present such views to any future meeting of the Working Group.
43- ولعلَّ المؤتمر يحثُّ الدول غير الأطراف في بروتوكول الأسلحة النارية على أن تقدم آراءها وتعليقاتها بشأن بروتوكول الأسلحة النارية، متصدّية في ذلك لمواطن قوته وما يثيره من تحديات على السواء، وذلك بغية تدعيم التعاون على منع ومكافحة واستئصال صنع الأسلحة النارية وأجزائها ومكوّناتها والذخيرة والاتجار بها بصورة غير مشروعة، ولتقديم هذه الآراء إلى أيِّ اجتماع للفريق العامل يُعقد في المستقبل.

The Instrument also emphasizes the importance of import marking, noting that it is a requirement for States parties to the Firearms Protocol (International Tracing Instrument, para. 8(b), Firearms Protocol, art. 8(1)(b)).
ويؤكد الصك أيضا على أهمية العلامات للأسلحة المستوردة، مشيرا إلى أن هذا هو مطلب الدول الأطراف في بروتوكول الأسلحة النارية للأمم المتحدة (الصك، الفقرة 8 (ب)؛ بروتوكول الأسلحة النارية، المادة 8 (1) (ب)).

As at 24 July 2006, the Secretariat had received responses to the questionnaire from 38 Member States, of which 20 were parties to the Firearms Protocol, 10 were signatories and 8 were non-signatories (see figure below).
