Upon the instruction of our respective Governments, we have the honour to request, pursuant to rule 14 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly, the inclusion in the agenda of the sixty-first session of the General Assembly of a supplementary item entitled " A proactive role for the United Nations in maintaining peace and security in East Asia " .

51. With regard to item 41 of the draft agenda (A proactive role for the United Nations in maintaining peace and security in East Asia), the General Committee decided not to recommend its inclusion in the agenda of the sixty-first session.

These proposals were listed under item 41, " A proactive role for the United Nations in maintaining peace and security in East Asia " , and item 155, " Question of the representation and participation of the 23 million people of Taiwan in the United Nations " of the draft agenda (see A/BUR/61/1).

At that meeting, it was suggested by the Office of Legal Affairs that the cosponsors of proposals entitled " A proactive role for the United Nations in maintaining peace and security in East Asia " (A/61/193) and " Question of the representation and participation of the 23 million people of Taiwan in the United Nations " (A/61/194) had failed to raise points of order to protest the errors we asserted in our letter of 3 October.
