The task of the Group was to prepare a report on the continuing operation of the Register and on its further development.

56. By its resolution 60/226, the General Assembly requested me to establish a group of governmental experts to assist in preparing a report on the continuing operation and further development of the Register, to be submitted to the Assembly at its sixty-first session.

In accordance with General Assembly resolution 51/45 H of 10 December 1996, entitled " Transparency in armaments " , the 1997 Group of Governmental Experts was established to prepare a report on the continuing operation of the Register and its further development, with a view to a decision at the fifty-second session of the Assembly.

8. The 1997 Group of Governmental Experts was established to prepare a report on the continuing operation of the Register and its further development.6 The General Assembly took note of the report7 of the Group8 and endorsed the recommendations contained therein.
