١- تنشأ بموجب هذا لجنة للعلم والتكنولوجيا كهيئة فرعية لمؤتمر اﻷطراف. لكي تقدم إليه المعلومات والمشورة بشأن المسائل العلمية والتكنولوجية المتعلقة بمكافحة التصحر وتخفيف آثار الجفاف.

39. According to article 24 of the Convention, the CST should provide the COP with information and advice on scientific and technological matters relating to combating desertification and mitigating the effects of drought.

5- لجنة العلم والتكنولوجيا هيئة فرعية تابعة لمؤتمر الأطراف أُنشئت بموجب المادة 24 من الاتفاقية لكي تقدم إليه المعلومات والمشورة بشأن المسائل العلمية والتكنولوجية المتعلقة بمكافحة التصحر وتخفيف آثار الجفاف.

The main function of the SBSTA is " to provide the Conference of the Parties and, as appropriate, its other subsidiary bodies with timely information and advice on scientific and technological matters relating to the Convention " (Article 9.1).
٣١- والمهمة الرئيسية للهيئة الفرعية للمشورة العلمية والتكنولوجية هي " تزويد مؤتمر اﻷطراف، وحسبما يكون ملائما، هيئاته الفرعية اﻷخرى، بالمعلومات والمشورة، في الوقت المناسب، بشأن المسائل العلمية والتكنولوجية المتصلة بالاتفاقية " )المادة ٩-١(.

As indicated by the terms of reference of the CST (decision 15/COP.1), the major role of the CST is to provide the COP with information and advice on scientific and technological matters relating to combating desertification and mitigating the effects of drought, in order to ensure that its decisions are based on the most up-to-date scientific knowledge.
ويتمثل دور اللجنة الرئيسي، كما تشير إليه اختصاصاتها (المقرر 15/م أ-1)، في تزويد مؤتمر الأطراف بالمعلومات والمشورة بشأن المسائل العلمية والتكنولوجية المتصلة بمكافحة التصحر والتخفيف من آثار الجفاف، بما يكفل استناد قراراته إلى أحدث المعارف العلمية.

4. According to article 24 of the Convention, as a subsidiary body of the Conference of the Parties, the mandate of the CST " is to provide it (the COP) with information and advice on scientific and technological matters relating to combating desertification and mitigating the effects of drought " .
4- تنص المادة 24 من الاتفاقية على أن ولاية لجنة العلم والتكنولوجيا، بوصفها هيئة فرعية لمؤتمر الأطراف، هي " أن تقدم إليه (مؤتمر الأطراف) المعلومات والمشورة بشأن المسائل العلمية والتكنولوجية المتعلقة بمكافحة التصحر وتخفيف آثار الجفاف " .

According to article 24 of the Convention, the CST is " ... to provide it (the COP) with information and advice on scientific and technological matters relating to combating desertification and mitigating the effects of drought " and " the COP shall decide, at its first session, on the terms of reference of the Committee " .
