Most recently, the Scientific Group of the London Convention has studied proposals for carbon sequestration in geological structures under the ocean floor.145 While it is intended that the CO2 would be trapped in these structures, if it escapes, the consequences could be similar to those of deep injection.

39. There is a general consensus that nominations to the smaller Scientific Group would be based on geographical representation, using the accepted regional groupings of the United Nations system, but there is no consensus about the number of representatives per region.
