The scientific peer review process produced a number of proposals that, if taken together, make the monitoring and assessment of the impacts of the Convention more feasible across the varying levels of capacity among the country Parties.

A suggestion was made for regional fisheries cooperation, in particular through regional scientific peer review of information on the state of fish stocks and catches.

This refinement is based on a thorough revision of prior work done on the identification and selection of progress indicators, culminating in the outcomes of the scientific peer review and pilot tracking exercise considered in detail by the CST at COP 10.
ويستند هذا التنقيح إلى مراجعة مستفيضة للعمل الذي أُنجز سابقاً لتحديد مؤشرات التقدم واختيارها، والذي تُوج بنتائج استعراض النظراء العلمي وعملية التتبع التجريبية اللذين تناولتهما اللجنة بتفصيل في أثناء الدورة العاشرة لمؤتمر الأطراف.

It should be noted that their involvement is related to two major initiatives: the scientific peer review for the refinement of the set of impact indicators, mandated by the COP in decision 17/COP.9 and in the publication of the findings of the UNCCD 1st Scientific Conference.
ولا بد من الإشارة إلى أن مشاركتهم شملت مبادرتين رئيسيتين هما استعراض النظراء العلمي لتنقيح مجموعة مؤشرات تقييم الأداء بناء على طلب مؤتمر الأطراف في مقرره 17/م أ-9، ونشر استنتاجات المؤتمر العلمي الأول المنعقد في إطار الاتفاقية.

The rural poverty rate and land cover/land productivity were recommended by the experts involved in the scientific peer review as metrics to measure the proportion of the population living above the poverty line and the land cover status, respectively.
وأوصى الخبراء المشاركون في استعراض النظراء العلمي باعتماد نسبة الفقر في المناطق الريفية والغطاء الأرضي/إنتاجية الأراضي باعتبارهما أداتين تقيسان نسبة السكان الذين يعيشون فوق خط الفقر وحالة الغطاء الأرضي، على التوالي.

24. One of the critical needs identified through the scientific peer review was how the underlying logic (and in some cases, language) of the indicator set hierarchy needed to be fine-tuned in order to maximize the potential for the indicator set to meet the strategic objectives of the UNCCD.

43. The scientific peer review concluded that each of the proposed impact indicators and/or the underlying data sets is at a different stage of development and implementation, and none is owned or managed by any one organization, with, as yet, no mechanism for coordination and collaboration (ICCD/CST(S-2)/INF.1 and ICCD/COP(10)/CST/INF.1).

13. Based on the findings of the scientific peer review process, the provisional set of 11 impact indicators approved by the COP in its decision 17/COP.9 has been subject to several adjustments in order to facilitate their application at country level.

One of the critical outputs of the scientific peer review was the refinement of the structure of the indicator set into a hierarchy, making it possible to distinguish what to measure (general indicators) and how it should be measured (metrics/proxies).
