وهدف هذه الاتفاقية هو تعزيز المسؤولية المشتركة والجهود التعاونية بين الأطراف في التجارة الدولية بشأن بعض المواد الكيميائية الخطرة لحماية صحة الإنسان والبيئة من الأضرار المحتملة.

اتفاقية روتردام هي اتفاق بيئي متعدد الأطراف صمم للنهوض بالمسؤولية المشتركة والجهود المتلاحمة بين الأطراف بشأن مواد كيميائية معينة خطرة متداولة في التجارة الدولية.

In other words, while the Convention sets out its ultimate objective to protect human health and the environment from potential harm of certain hazardous chemicals and to contribute to their environmentally sound use, it focuses on " international trade of certain hazardous chemicals " and it is designed " to promote shared responsibility and cooperative efforts among Parties " thereon.
