It was established by H.H. Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ruler of Dubai, in recognition of the philosophy, vision and achievements of former President, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who worked tirelessly to preserve and protect the environment for future generations of his country, the region and the world.

Today, the League of Arab States is an influential international organization that plays an important role in strengthening international security and stability. Its friendly and fruitful relations with the United Nations must, to a large extent, be attributed to the efforts of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
أما جامعة الدول العربية التي باتت اليوم منظمة دولية مؤثرة تؤدي دورا هاما في تعزيز الأمن والاستقرار، فإن علاقاتها الودية والمثمرة مع الأمم المتحدة، يجب أن تنسب، في جزء كبير منها، إلى جهود سمو الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان.

To recognize, reward and promote major pioneering contributions in the field of the environment and sustainable development, in accordance with the development philosophy and vision of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and in support of global initiatives, such as Agenda 21, the Millennium Development Goals and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation.

وقد أنشأ هذه الجائزة في عام 1999 الشيخ محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم، نائب رئيس الدولة ورئيس مجلس وزراء دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة وحاكم دبي، اعترافا بفلسفة ورؤية ومنجزات المرحوم الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان، الرئيس السابق، الذي عمل بلا كلل من أجل الحفاظ على البيئة وحمايتها للأجيال المقبلة في بلده وفي المنطقة وفي العالم كله.

Many statements have been made and several resolutions have been adopted by the Security Council on this tragic situation and on its grave consequences for peace, security and stability in that region. All this clearly reaffirms the position of His Highness, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, which I cited last year from this rostrum.
لقد ألقيت العديد من البيانات والكلمات، واعتمد مجلس اﻷمـــن مجموعة من القرارات حول هذه الحالة المأساوية وخطورتهـــــا البالغة على السلم واﻷمن والاستقرار في تلك المنطقة، اﻷمر الذي يؤكد وبصورة جلية موقف صاحب السمو الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان رئيس دولة اﻹمارات العربية المتحدة، الذي تم اﻹعلان عنه من على هذا المنبـــــر العام الماضي على النحو التالي:

The Council expressed its profound sorrow over the death of His Highness the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates -- may God rest his soul -- who departed this world after a life filled with glorious works and great achievements and with true giving and tireless, sincere work for the benefit of the United Arab Emirates, its progress and prosperity and the welfare of its people.
وعبر المجلس الأعلى، عن عميق مشاعر الأسى والحزن، لوفاة المغفور له، بإذن الله تعالى، حضرة صاحب السمو الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان رئيس دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، تغمده الله بواسع رحمته ورضوانه، الذي انتقل إلى جوار ربه بعد حياة مليئة بالأعمال الجليلة والإنجازات الكبيرة، ورحلة حافلة بالعطاء الصادق والعمل المخلص الدؤوب لما فيه خير دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة وتقدمها وازدهارها ورخاء شعبها.
